Need Help Identifying 557c?

Hey guys need a little help.... I Stopped at an antique store in Japan picked up a stock book. Inside had several stamps (6+) in it identified as 557c? I used a perf guage and verified it has 10 perf top and bottom. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am sure you have # 586 instead, as the 557c that I can find in Auction references only had either top OR ( not and) bottom or in one case 1 side perf 10, the other sides being perf 11. Whereas the 586 had perf 10 on all sides, so it would have top and bottom perf 10 ( and the sides also). Both stamps look same except for the perf. By the way if it was, it would be a 10-20,000. Check the perf on the sides also.

Scott's 2008 Catalogue says the 557c is a 5 cent dark blue, perf 10 at the top or bottom.

Have your stamp examined by an expert. I'm very curious to what the outcome will be. I also second Gussyboy's request. What other great stamps do you have? What do you collect?

When you use the perf gauge on the sides, are they consistent with what you get top and bottom? Top and bottom do appear to have the same perforations. What are the prefs all around?

That was my thought also. I put a gauge against the screen and the perfs seemed the same all around. I didn't even get a chance to tell him to claim a point for first post. T360 is so much sharper at noticing than me. T360 you can claim a point for being first to welcome him . I hope people keep their scores, as I am blurry-eyed as it is and don't want to miss anyone. Teela, read the thread on the membership contest and post some more !

If I remember correctly, the piece of perforating pins that was inserted in error was long enough to perf 3 full stamps and half of another in the gauge of perf 10 on 1 side of the stamp and the other 3 sides would be perf 11 gauge. Think I read an article in Linn's around 2006 or so. My US Specialist Cat is 2004 and I do have a 2008 Classic, neither makes any mention of a stamp perf'ed 11 on 3 sides and a compound perf of 10 & 11 on the remainding side. Anyone have any info on the compound perf issue? Mike in NYC / meostamps

I'd love to know if there was ever a resolution to this topic. I'm working through a bag of 500 used stamps and ran across the same situation - i.e. perf 11 on the sides and perf 10 on the top and bottom. The stamp still has enough envelope attached that the perf 11 is not in question. The top and bottom have OK selvage, but not so much that, if it had been huge, it could have been re-perf'd. However top and bottom?

The originally posted stamp is a perf 10 rotary Scott 586. A 557c would be a flat plate stamp. The rotary printed stamps are slightly taller and have less intense color easy to tell apart to anyone who has seen a few examples. Join the United States Stamp Society for additional details about the "perf 10 on one side" variety. At least one good article can be found on the USSS web site in a back issue of the "United States Specialist". Because the pin spacing and alignment was irregular, the catalog description is approximate. By the way, complete images of the row exist on the Philatelic Foundation web site. Hello all, intersting thread.
Last week I tried sorting my U.S. stamps again, & became curious about the damaged middle stamp top row, but only have the standard older Scott cat. with limited input, So had to put them aside again after realising I'm going to need a bigger book shelf
Any input welcome.
