Lets start at the beginning of the postage stamp use in 1840.

In the east the Crown Colony of Newfoundland with Labrador est. 1824 Labrador is smaller principally the Atlantic watershed area.

Prince Edward Island est 1769 as St. John's Island name changed 1799.

Colonies of Nova Scotia & Cape Breton Island merged in 1820.

New Brunswick split from Nova Scotia in 1784 with undetermined border with the USA.

Lower Canada (the basis for Quebec) & Upper Canada (the basis for Ontario) est. in 1791, these 2 areas are within the St. Lawrence watershed.

Ruperts Land was a vast territory the Britsh Crown had placed into the hands of the Hudson Bay Co. this territory includes the entire Hudson Bay Watershed to the USA border.

Oregon Territory jointly administrated jointly between UK & USA est. 1818 from the Mexican border now California north to 55 parallel east to Rupert's Land & includes Vancouver & the Queen Charlotte Islands.

The Northwestern Territories was a British claimed unorganized area surrounded by Rupert's Land to the east, Oregon to the south & Russian Alaska to the west to the north are the Arctic Islands which are not claimed nor occupied.

1840, July Upper & Lower Canada renamed Canada East (Q) & Canada West (O).

1841 Canada East & West merge to form the Province of Canada.

1842 Maine & New Brunswick border settled.

1846 Oregon/Columbia divided along the 49th parallel includes Vancouver Island.

1849 Vancouver Island colony est.

1852 Queen Charlotte Island assigned to Vancouver Is. as a Dependency.

1858 British Columbia colony est north to 55th parallel.

1862 Stikine Territory est. north of British Columbia to the 62nd parallel.

1863 Queen Charlotte Islands reassigned to British Columbia.
Stikine Territory divided at the 60 parallel between Br. Columbia & the Northwestern Terr.

1866 Vancouver Is united with British Columbia.

1867 Dominion of Canada formed from Canada, New Brunswick & Nova Scotia.

1869 Metis Republic of Canada in the former Red River Colony area essentially ending
Hudson Bay co control in that area.
Hudson Bay Co. sells Rupert's Land back to the UK.

1870 Metis rebellion ends with the est. of Manitoba 1/3 it's current size separated
from Ruperts Land.
Rupert's Land renamed North-West Territories.
North-West Territories assigned to Canada includes Northwestern Territory but
excluding the Arctic Islands.

1871 British Columbia joins Canada.

1873 Price Edward Island joins Canada.

1880 UK transfers the Arctic Islands to Canada.

1949 Newfoundland with Labrador join Canada completing Canada's expansion.

Had to laugh at this post, especially the ice-cream diplomacy. maybe that would work in the middle east? nah, too hot

Anyways, my 2 pennies (or should I say pence?) is from Wikipedia on Newfoundland:

It was a "Colony" of England from 1583 to 1907 (and issued stamps accordingly from abooout 1860 to then)
It became a "Dominion" of the British Empire (a self governing entity of the British empire separate from Canada) from 1907 to 1949
It became part of Canada in 1949
