I've been collecting stamps for a loooong time, but I am relatively new to Canadian Philately, having mostly dabbled with the beautiful revenues of Canada and her provinces. Could anyone advise me on what standard Canadian catalog is used within the hobby? Possibly one that lists varieties. I also know there is a separate catalog for Newfoundland stamps. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you PP

Unitrade is the favorite amongst Canada collectors. It uses the Scott numbering system, so there is continuity between the two publishers, it has color photos of all the stamps, it lists every variety including plate blocks, covers, and many varieties Scott does not list, and is reasonably priced (typically $40-$45 on ebay). Brian Edit: Here is a link to another thread on this forum talking about the Unitrade catalogue. https://goscf.com/t/15599 |

I generally buy a copy of the Unitrade catalog every 2 to 3 years (given I still collect current Canadian stamps). I wish they would include a few of the other stamps. There is a line of war tax stamps marked inland revenue that isn't included. But all in all a very nice catalog. |

I have to concur. I just got my first Unitrade catalogue as a birthday present, and I was thrilled. My wife was surprised I even knew what it was. The guy at the stamp store recommended it to her. Not only does it use the Scott numbers as previously mention, but it lists tons of variations and has great pictures with terrific colour reproduction. Highly recommended (and no, I don't own stock in the company). |

I echo the recommendations and comments concerning the Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps. I particularly like that it is spirally bound and when you open the book it lays flat. Quote: I also know there is a separate catalog for Newfoundland stamps. Philatelic Pfool, the Unitrade has a nice listing of Newfoundland stamps as well as those issued by Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and British Columbia. |

Unitrade is not only the most detailed Canadian catalogue it's probably one of the best specialized catalogs of any country out there. Also the price is quite reasonable and really cheap when buying older issues still available from Canada Post, Philatelic Centre. I believe there are even no shipping charges to the US if you purchase from CP. |

thanks for all the good advice. I will pick up a Unitrade Canada and I'll assume the 2012 is out. I'll try ebay as Rileysan suggested. Good to know that the provinces are included, thanks Mhc99. I think the separate Newfie cat is over $100. LAter for that. Puzzler thanks for the heads up on the van Damn revenue cat. I have an older one, will have to send for the 2009. Once again thank you all for the input and friendly support. PP |

Can also highly recommend Unitrade. Together with Norgeskatalogen the best catalog I have used by far. |

the 2012 copy will likely be out around October. That's when they seem to come out. |

Buy the 2011 Unitrade or wait for the 2012 I'll check out ebay and see if there's a good deal on a 2011. PP |

That's a wonderful page puzzler, I bookmarked it. This neophyte Canadian collector is very appreciative for all the assistance provided through the SCF.
A hearty shout out to all!!

I'm sort of late to this thread, so do not know if people still see old threads
I agree 100% that the Unitrade is fantastic and a must have for Canada and Provinces.
At the same time, I would echo Puzzler's comment and link to a specialized Newfoundland only catalog...referred to as NSSC and published by Walsh and Butt. In my opinion, it is by far much better than Unitrade for Newfoundland. It is much more detailed, with very deep dives on things like cancel types, revenue stamps, details of first flight covers, advertising covers, railroad cancels, perforations and many many more. Again--only Newfoundland. But if you want to collect Newfoundland, you should have the Unitrade for its gold standard and comparability--but essential to have the NSSC too.
PS I have an 5 year old Unitrade that I do not need any more--if you want it, let me know--I'd be happy to give or trade it |
