New Zealand - Is This How The Stamp Is Supposed To Look?

This stamp is from New Zealand, probably sometime in the mid-1930s. I'm wondering whether the stamp is supposed to look like this or whether there's normally a value or some other kind of writing on the stamp in the spaces at top and bottom.

And SG 700. The normal stamp has watermark (multi NZ over star) inverted (40p mint 30p used). Watermark upright is an 'error', SG 700a (£3.75 mint, £4.75 used).

The normal watermark is inverted? Very strange!!
