Danish Railway Stamps: The first such stamps were issued,
in 1865, by the Jydsk-Fysenske Railways; used for parcels.
They were issued until about 1970.
The railway parcel stamps of Denmark are appealing to casual
collectors, who prefer colorful items that depict a train or
locomotive.
They are readily available, as many reached collectors hands,
and one can buy them relatively cheaply. I saw today an offer
of 100 different for $45.
Moreover, there are a large number of different designs, plus
a comprehensive illustrated catalog [Jensen] (though it's in Danish),
so one can have the satisfaction of a moderate challenge, with
the realistic hope of a complete collection.
There are two other dimensions to this area. The first is that
there were a multitude (over 75) of railroads that issued these
stamps. Second, there were a number of different categories
of these railway stamps.
The catalogue seperates them as follows: (railway name in brackets)
A (Avisporto) newspaper stamp (LFJS and NKJ)
B (Bandmaerker) stamps for wrappers (DSB and LNJ)
F (frankeringsmaerker) fiscal stamps (which I take to mean tax stamps)
G (Gebyrmaerker) late fee stamps
P (Efterkravprovisionsmaerker) Cash on Delivery provisional stamps
(ROHJ)
R (Rutebilmaerker) bus stamps.
There are still many railway companies left in Denmark.
