I've got two questions about this issue I'm hoping someone here knows the answers to. First, this stamp exists, so far as I'm aware, with a watermark crown or no watermark at all.

This copy seems to have a watermark, but it looks more like letters than a crown. Is there a third option?

Second, I haven't successfully googled this place name. Is it Crafvarne?

All assistance greatly appreciated!

Nice Grafvarne cancel. I can check Facit later, if no one has reported back by the time I get home.

Thanks for the place name, Wadmalatz. I can't find any information out about this locality, not in English anyway.

Here's another Grafvarne cancel, one for sale on tradera.com

As for the watermark, I'd appreciate it if you could have a look, Cjd. The stamp definitely has a watermark, but it doesn't look like a crown with a cross on the top to me (unless it's sideways, which is always possible).

Facit says that this stamp is known on a paper type that they refer to as B paper, which includes a crown watermark and repeating KUNGL. POSTVERKET (designated in the catalogue as KPV) throughout the sheet.

There are also inverted watermark and portions-of-two-watermark varieties.

None of them are enough to retire on, but they make nice finds, with fairly significant premiums.

Thanks, Cjd. It sounds like it would have to be the type on B paper!

I thought there might have been a KPV there, but I was confused as I could also discern a shape that is something like a crown. Normally, KPV goes with lines, not a crown.

Only problem is, if it's a crown on this stamp, it's sideways, which only complicates things.

More than ever, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Morley Bright watermark detector I've ordered. I hope this will enable me to see it properly, as I don't have a software application that would allow me to do the CYAN thing with the scan, as recommended by one of the moderators of this site.

An update on this issue. The 5 ore green stamp shown above exists with the KPV watermark. The Facit catalogue number for this variety is 79Bz. It's not particularly valuable - indeed one website is selling a mint strip of 5 for $42.

An image of the KPV watermark can be viewed here:

http://www.sfu.se/skola.php?edit=1&id=18&page=1

My stamp (reverse shown above) has the KPV watermark reversed, in other words, reading the way it should from the front. I haven't yet been able to establish whether this variety has been listed or what it's worth.

The stamp is also known with crown + KPV (Facit# 75vm3). However, this is extremely rare and apparently only one used example has as yet been discovered. As is the usual practice with catalogues when dealing with items of which very few examples are known, Facit does not give a price for such a stamp.

A seller from Iceland recently listed the 10 ore stamp from the same series with crown + KPV watermark for $2,495:

Regarding a 10-ore crown + KPV, Facit says there are two known. (I didn't check the auction listing to verify that it matches the catalogue information.)
