Violin

From Austria

"Musical instruments" is the euphonic title of a new attractive series of stamps from Austria that is now beginning with the first issue, the violin.

In the tradition of European classical music, the violin plays an extremely important and often indeed central role - many famous composers have dedicated a major part of their works to it. The versatile and very different uses of the violin in music range from classical orchestral and chamber music to traditional folksongs, big band, dance, jazz and rock music.

One more for tonight: Cyprus
The Beethoven one loks like the Chinese stamps.

Date of Issue : 28 January 2011

The Cyprus Post has issued a series of three stamps commemorating the most famous composers of the 18th century: Bach, Mozart and Beethoven.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist whose sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. He enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, an unrivalled control of harmonic and motivic organization, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms and textures.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 -1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, piano, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 -1827) was a German composer and pianist. He is considered to have been the most crucial figure in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western classical music, and remains one of the most famous and influential composers of all time.

Here is an image of an engraved airmail stamp depicting three Greek muses, issued by Brazil on August 13, 1948 to commemorate the centenary of the National School of Music, Scott No. C70, SG No. 776. Based on their emblematic symbols, I would identify these muses as Calliope (Epic poetry - holding a writing tablet), Erato (Love poetry - playing a kithara, a type of lyre), and Polyhymnia (Hymns - carrying a veil).

fifia - You're welcome, and I couldn't agree more that there is much to learn through our stamps.

Here are images of three stamps depicting traditional Congolese musicians, all engraved by the Institute de Gravure, Paris, printed at Malines (Mechelen), Belgium, and issued for use in Belgian Congo in 1932, Scott Nos. 143-45, SG Nos. 184-86.
