During the Peron era the post office issued 7 1/2 million stamps (not cataloged by Scott)which were technically "non postal labels" I want to keep the story as short as possible..the labels were to raise money for a monument to the descamisado ..the mythical supporter of Peron who was supposedly to poor to own a shirt ! the labels were placed on sale in early 1947 and there is no available data on how many were sold and how much money was collected...it was generally assumed that postal patrons wishing to get their mail past pro Peronista mail clerks had best include generous amounts of the descamisado labels next to the regular postage stamps on letters..Rod is going to ask for a picture but I do not have one..i know the image is of a shirtless man carrying a flag...7 1/2 million of these labels were printed and I am searching for a cover or covers with the label for my collection !

With all the sales of these the monument was never built and the money was never found. |

AARRGH, I have got to stop wanting everything. Saw the labels, went to ebay, and sure enough one was for sale on buy it now. Only $1.50 (US), but $6.50 shipping from Argentina. In a trance I clicked through to the end and ended up spending $8.00 for one of the labels. Somebody stop me. |

I do empathise with your position, but it tickles me, that other guys do what I do sometimes, "Goodness! what was I thinking!" I am want to express, then I settle down, and figure some excuse, like "well, that's what I would have spent in a week if I smoked" that sort of lame reason, and I punish myself by not buying biscuits that week. I gotta admit, postal charges do punish on occasions.
All in all, you <did> get a yummy set of labels.

Rohumpy I have the same problem...i do not know why the Argentine dealers charge so much..my daughter and son in law were down there and the exchange rate was like 3 or 4 to 1 in favor of the dollar...Argentine covers are plentiful compared to Guatemala which has a much smaller literate population and yet I can buy Guatemala airmail covers from the 1930's cheaper than I can buy a commercial cover from the Argentines ! |

Rod, I tell myself the same thing. I can go to the local convenience store and by the time I have gotten a couple of snacks and something to drink, I can spend 8 dollars without a blink. The prices of everything are high and keep increasing. It is only pieces of paper I am trading for other things, ( and in the case of stamps, other pieces of paper) so whats the use worrying. Besides the stamps are sooooo pretty. |

yes! I know, I received a letter and the value was 1.44. It's a shame, but we are very undervalued right now. But I hope to make friends and exchange. |
