Crikey Barb, you start off with such a beautiful work of art, and end up with neon carmine (Erk!) Yep forget about those prissy Ultramarine, give me "deep blue" any day, very regal. On an odd day like today, I could be forgiven perhaps to say the early Ceylon issues belong to the most beautiful stamps in all of Christendom, Sometime I reckon they beat the pants off the Penny Black. What happened to your stamp bottom left And a punch on the snooter for the guy who used scissors at the top! |

I got specialized; not world. There are so many to count, and so little time. Forgive me if I overstep my bounds of resources... |

Barb, If I were you, I would be taking that first deep blue penny for a dealer to look at, the left hand bottom corner looks very curious.
No probs with assistance, that's what we enjoy most times :)

The bottom left almost looks like an attempted repair. What does the reverse look like? |

I don't think it is a repair.. I think she has a freak, This really does bear looking into more.
Barb post a larger image or send a link to a larger image. I can look in my SG tonight. I have the 2010 1940 to 1970 British and Colonies so that will be in there. |

From the looks of the back of it, it appears to be patched with something. Not sure. it needs to be looked at under a microscope or water mark fluid. |

Wow! that indeed is a repaired stamp, fascinating I wonder where the repair piece came from, must be from a similar issue the deep blue is identical.
I wouldn't touch that stamp at all Barb, leave as is with a note in your album.

Curious as to why keep it? Example? Is is a "good" thing? It can't have any value can it? |

The value is in more than the monetary aspect. It is also in the beauty of the stamp, the rarity (I have collected for 40 years and never seen that one, although I have seen on SCF a lot I haven't seen also), an example for learning and comparison as a repaired stamp, possible colour varieties (?) and possible cancel varieties.
When I was just collecting to have one of everything I wanted perfect specimens or as perfect as I could get at the time, once I understood how important condition in many things is to a stamp's value (value as percieved in other collector's eyes).
However, as I became more and more experienced with many different stamps and varieties I could see the value of have a 'damaged value' stamp on hand. Comparison to a set of damaged but non-forged stamps is more valuable than having to wonder about whether a stamp is forged or not for many years. And colour, paper, cancel, perforation, etc, varieties also.
Perhaps you are not in that space right now but you may be in the future. The art of appreciation is best learned in small doses I feel. |

Ah Puzzler, well put, as usual. In this age of instant gratification, it is easy to think we'll get a handle on "stamp collecting" and "what I got from Granpa" in a couple of sentences. WRONG. Way wrong, and as you've all probably figured out, my collecting gene has kicked in, but I still don't know enough about what I don't want.... and I still don't have enough answers fast enough, which is where all you wonderful people come in. Wouldn't it be fun if we could all get into the same time and space compendium for ... 24 hours? WOW! thanks again. B |

Barb,
Easy answer to one of your questions. Until you decide what you want and don't want. Just keep it until you figure it out. Unless space is an issue, it's no big deal. That particular stamp is a puzzle, because, some of the others like myself would be trying to find out WHY that was done that way and WHAT stamp did the repair piece come from. |

Brilliant reply from the Puzz! Someone else quoted a similar thing about the value of a stamp beyond the monetry value yesterday? Stampstudy, Litho or Russ , not sure. It does come in small doses. |
