We have the same, but photo ID is rather unnecessary if you can't verify the face!

I have sent money to and received money from Australia, via Pay Pal. Never heard of this before.

I had this problem with paypal. Once you get to around $1,200-1,300 in payments, they go through an ID process.

If Paypal proves awkward has anyone thought of using an online alternative?
allpay.net and paymate spring to mind.

With recent (last 12 months) changes to the tax and centrelink laws pay pal must supply all information to them if the pay pal account grows by $20,000 or more in any financial year.

Using pay pal a lot outside of ebay sounds like a no no as well.

The scammers are the only ones that have been demanding pay pal information from me.

I make sure all my pay pal records go to the tax man and centrelink every year no matter what the income might be.

Now that I think of it when opening our pay pal account we supplied business number with bank account in that name and also two bank accounts in our names and a heap of other personal info that I will leave at that!

Our pay pal turnover is around $2,000 per month and we as yet have had no trouble.

But then ebay and pay pal are getting their fair share per month as well. Which we do not have a problem with.

KGV,
I think you hit the nail right on the head with your references to ebay.
ebay 'owns' Paypal so if you intend to use it outside of ebay then you should never connect the two. It is quite easy to run an ebay account without connecting it to paypal. You simply make any payments by paypal-paypal direct transfer.
As I said earlier though, there are alternatives to paypal. paymate in particular is very Aussie friendly.
