The fame of Thonet's design goes way beyond Europe. Michael Thonet (1796-1871) began designing and making furniture in Germany and then opened a factory in Vienna. The company is still run by the family. Picture from the catalog ca. 1900. See also the other posts of bent-wood furniture.   (I'm lucky to have three Thonet design chairs!) |

Ikea celebrated 70 years in 2013. The company has been successful in many countries for many years. Perhaps Wielkopolski refers to production of furniture in Poland. There is a Polish breed of horse known by that name.  |

Furniture made of rattan, a kind of palm plant, can be works of art. Decorative, comfortable to sit in and light in weight. Plenty of hours go into making them.  |
