I could use an ID and near value for this red 18 Franc Bayern. Anyone out there in the Bayern department? Thanks - Jeff

Hi Jeff, It's a striking design and a nice colour. It's a pity though that someone was so rough with the scissors!
The stamp is an 18 kreuzer value. I believe the word "Franco" indicates that postage has been paid - you see it a lot in postal markings on old covers, |

I am assuming franco would be franked or something to do with franking. |

Michel catalogue price for the 18 Kr used is 180 Euros.
However, the price you'd get in real life is much lower because of the poor margins.
Prices are higher for stamps on paper with red silk fibres (I think that's what the word 'Seidenfaden' used in the catalogue means). |

Jeff, I'll be at the Northwest Philatelic Library on Saturday. They have copies of the German Philatelic Society's books on authenticating 19th century Germany and German states stamps. I have used them numerous times to authenticate my own collection of German states (another area of specialty for me). I'll be happy to verify it for you :)

Thank you Brian, that would be very helpful. I would appreciate knowing one way or another. Perhaps Peter was referring to condition, but I am not sure it would devalue that severly. Maybe real dollars, but not catalog value. Thanks as always, Jeff |

A genuine item that's rare will always have some value even if it's a filler. In this case, the stamp has no margins and and the lower, right corner looks a little rough. But it's clean, has excellent color, a light to moderate cancel, and displays well ... and as such, is inherently valuable :) |

Jeff,
I am looking at the German Philatelic Society's reference manual of forgeries for Bavaria even as I type this. There are no known forgeries of this stamp listed for the 3k through 18k. That doesn't mean they don't exist, it just means there are none that are considered 'good' forgeries.
I would classify this as an authentic Scott cat 14, Ver Red. Cat: $140 with 4 margins.
Grat!
