I picked up this lot recently on ebay. I have learned that the top 4 stamps are privately issued stamps by a steam ship company moving freight and mail between Venezuela and Saint Thomas Island. But that's as much as I've been able to discern. I haven't been able to find them in the Scott catalogues. Can anyone shed any more light on the subject? Thanks! Rileysan

SG lists the La Guaira stamps in their Part 20 South America catalogue at the end of their Venezuela listings. These are from the last issue from 1868-70.
There were two value: ˝ real green and 2 reals red. They were issued in 1868 with normal gum perf 11˝-12˝ and compound and then in 1870 with very brown gum perf 10. They were later reprinted perf 15. |

Hi Rileysan,
Some of these are listed in Scott. The Thomas stamps are in SG Part 20 as nigelc has said and are also in the Venezuela Blanco catalog. From what I can see some of the others are known as Escuelas and not listed.
Middle Row hard to see details but look at Scott 58 to 67 and Scott 79 to 86
Bottom row Stamp 1 25c blue Scott 130 Stamp 3 10c brown Scott 115 Stamp 4 5c blue Scott 74 if overprint(can't see) Scott 108
If you wish, e-mail me with larger scans, and separate the rows of stamps, and I can give you better information:
jerrybemail-general "at" yahoo "dot" com
put SB-Venezuela in the subject line so I don't delete the e-mail as spam.

As per your request I extracted the Blanco information for the top row of stamps. There are other La Guaira stamps prior to this issue.
The catalog prices are for Mint and Used in 1992 Bolivars 1995 conversion 170Bolivars / USD Information from Blanco (specialized Venezuela) 1992 catalog --------------------------------------------------------------------- San Tomas - La Guaira - Puerto Cabello Issued by J.A. Jesurun & Zoon Lithographed by Waterlow & Sons, London Sheets of 100 stamps Perf: 12˝ Watermarked Th Saunders (covers only 4 stamps sheet of 100)
Blanco 32, SG 25 ˝ real green 800 800 a) yellowish paper 800 800 b) unwatermarked 8,000 7,000 c) perf 11˝ 35,000
Blanco 33, SG 26 2 reales red 800 800 a) yellowish paper 800 800 b) unwatermarked 8,000 8,000 --------------------------------------------------------------------- San Tomas - La Guaira - Puerto Cabello Issued by J.A. Sorry about the formatting. You cannot make a good table in these forums. I tried insert list but I could not get it to work. I hope this will do.
I did not do the Escuelas as that is about 10-15 pages of information.

I'm not familiar with either of these catalogues, but I'm sure that the Oregon Stamp Society library has copies. What currency does SG use ... British pounds, Euros, or US dollars?

I also want to thank you for your effort in researching these items. It is very much appreciated! I guess I didn't do so bad on a lot that cost me $8.50

Hi Rileysan: Quote: I also want to thank you for your effort in researching these items. It is very much appreciated! I guess I didn't do so bad on a lot that cost me $8.50 You did real well. I would have paid a lot more just for the La Guaira stamps. Quote: I'm not familiar with either of these catalogues, but I'm sure that the Oregon Stamp Society library has copies. What currency does SG use ... British pounds, Euros, or US dollars? My 1980 SG Part 20 uses British pounds and pence. I assume the newest SG Part 20 uses Euros. If you are going to look for the catalog in the library the full name is: Venezuela Catálogo Especializado de Estampillas 1991 - 1992 Caracas Venezuela Author: Aurelio Blanco QuintanillaIf the library does not have it, they can probably get it from the the APRL (American Philatelic Research Library) by inter-library loan. I checked and they do have the 1991 - 1992 edition. Depending on the detail you want I would try to get the Blanco catalog. The SG detail is more of a notes type then detail. Realize that the catalog is in Spanish, however, the listings are relatively easy to translate. J.A. Jesurun & Zoon a shipping company with a private packet service that ran from Puerto Cabello & La Guaira in Venezuela, Curacao, formally part of the Dutch West Indies & Netherland Antilles as well as St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, formally part of the Danish West Indies. There may have been other Carribean port of calls. The stamps were issued using Venezuelian currency. |

Hope it's ok to revive this topic. So, all these 4 are steam boat stamps, and attributed to Venezuela? |

Does anyone know if the 4 above are all part of the same mail delivery line? And why does the catalog attribute them to Venezuela? |
