I recently found this 1947 US airmail (top) in a cigar box full of stamps. The colour should be carmine (as on the bottom stamp) but this one is distinctly orange.
It seems a little worn, the paper is soft. Could this just be fading, or is it a different issue than I can find in the catalogue? The colour seems pretty uniform for it to be faded.

It looks faded to me. I'll pull out some of mine and look at color variations.

Sort of a guess.
I have tens of these shades, I have always assumed
hot water when being soaked by persons unknown.

It is kind of beaten up, could be too many hot water baths.
Rats! I was hoping this was the retirement fund.

The faded postmark adds to the hot water hypothesis.

definitely faded/bleached, either by sun or soaking too long in warm tap water
