Nice looking NY Central railroad stock! Any idea who the portrait is of?



Wow I like the Penn Central Stock too! It is a little blurry though. Is that Mercury running across America? I see what looks like the outline of a map of America with buildings in the background. If you can, I would really like to see post a better scan of just the vignette.

I'd like to see more stocks and bonds from other collectors. Here are some of the more colorful and interesting ones from my collection.

My favorites are these two:

American Express, featuring a fancy "star in circle" cancel, certificate signed by Henry Wells and WIlliam Fargo. Most examples found are in considerably worse condition.




United States Stamp Company, presumably the first incorporated stamp business. A 5-line printed cancel to boot.

Did you catch these? The latter one was sold to the Treasurer of the Company (E.T. Gage) as Certificate No. 71!

I was doing a little internet research on the name "Edgar H. Judkins" in connection with the United States Stamp Company stock certificates previously posted.

It may be interesting to know that the name is quite rare and, in fact, only one Edgar H. Judkins is listed in the US Census for several decades in the 1800s, residing in Lowell, Massachusetts. The interesting thing is that Edgar H. Judkins was age 22 in the 1870 US Census and his occupation was listed as "clerk in store"; the 1880 US Census listed his age as 32 and his occupation as "clerk, fancy goods".

Given that the United States Stamp Company stock certificates were issued in 1866, it would suggest that he was only 18 years of age when he issued those certificates. That seems like quite an accomplishment for a young adult, but then again one must remember the era in which this occurred is very different from it what it is today.

I did find Edgar H. Judkins grave documented at the link below, which includes references to some of his family. He apparently lived from 1848-1920 and was buried in the family lot at Lowell Cemetery.

I just now read this interesting topic. Waaay back in 2008, member t360 wandered whose portrait appears on the New York Central Railroad Company stock certificate.

I am happy to identify the gentleman as none other than 'Commodore' Cornelius Vanderbilt, who put together a bunch of small rail lines to form the New York Central, the largest railroad line in America in the era from the Civil War until after World War I.

It's been some time since anyone posted any new images, so I'll add one. This is an unissued stock certificate of the United States Sealed Postal Card Company. Only a handful of these were ever issued. This was the company which produced the first self-contained letter sheets issued by the US Post Office Department in 1886. The USSPCC subcontracted with American Bank Note to printed these letter sheets (ABNCo also printed the stock certificate, btw.) Letter sheets were officially withdrawn in 1894 and the company collapsed the following year.
