SG358 Thomas, the year before, there was a shortage of stamps, and a lot of values were bisected. This stamp looks like it was a hurried attempt to get a low value to offices. (unconfirmed) Appears (unofficially) perforated as well, but I have never seen one.
This looks like a much cruder printing than the image shown in Scott's, and the green looks more yellow green than blue (though that could be my monitor or the scan). Could this be a counterfeit or reproduction?
No, James. That is simply not conceivable that it should be a counterfeit or a reproduction. These stamps are just too common. I suspect there may be slight differences in ink color and plates, but it is the real McCoy.
Just conjecture here, but when you consider the era, isn't it concievable that because of the simplicity, if not poor design of this stamp, that this would be a prime candidate for forging? Why pay a penny to mail your letter when you can make your own stamp!
