There's been some discussion of Indian states and the challenges they pose. Here's a couple for you experts.
Two stamps. On the right is one from Charkhari, but apart from that I know nothing. I have no reference material for these.
Any ideas?

jamesw, your first stamp is from Hyderabad. It's the 1911-12 ½ Anna green SERVICE overprint on the Wyon plate stamp, SG O30. It comes in various perforations; only the 13½ is scarce. (Hyderabad only once included its name on one of its stamps, but on the other hand, often stated the denomination in four languages: Hindi, Telegu, Persian and English.)

I've discussed the set your Charkhari comes from elsewhere: http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopi...?f=17&t=5149 A very entertaining little set, with a few worthwhile challenges in it!

Excellent Tony, thanks.
That's a great thread about the Charkhari. So, is the one I have what you would consider to be the double ring CDS? And pardon my ignorance, but what does CTO stand for.
I guess I should be checking perfs on these.
Appreciate it.

Delighted to find someone else to enjoy Charkhari! I'd be interested to know the perfs on your copy, to add to my lists. If you get around to measuring them, I'd love to know what they are.

Yours is the double-ring CTO cancellation. CTO = Cancelled to order; in those days, it would have meant some poor devil sitting in the Charkhari post office, day-in and day-out hand cancelling stamps, usually with one strike of the implement in the centre of a block of four. If your copy had been genuinely postally used, you would have had to put double locks on all your doors to keep me out. Postally used are scarce!

Tony, the Hyderabad is perf 11 1/2, while the Charkhari is 11.
And you're right, the Charkhari still has gum, so no one's put it on a letter.
Guess I'm not retiring just yet.

Okay, then, I have some bad news and some bad news. The Hyderabad is SG O30a, cat. value this year 20p. The Charkhari, well, Gibbons don't bother listing the perforation variations, but if they did, the perf 11 would be the cheap one.

But look on the bright side. At least now you won't have to store your collection in a bank vault to keep it safe from me.
