... this might be more accurately described as the "first day of sale at the philatelic sales unit", but it is not a second day of issue

Yes, technically this is correct. But in general parlance, as a collector of these, I can search ebay for "Second Day" and find what I am looking for. I expect that these will be listed as Second Day cancels, even if it is 3 or 4 calendar days after the official First Day ceremonies.

Like "Tax Day" is always April 15th, unless April 15th is on a Sunday, then Tax Day is April 16th. Or the "New Year's Day Parade" is held on January 2nd if the 1st is on a Sunday. We don't call it the "Day after New Year's Day Parade" that year, people still refer to it as the "New Year's Day" parade.

Here is an ebay listing showing a specific category of Cancellation Type for "Second Day of Issue". I would expect to find the August 28th Washington DC covers listed like this, even though accurately it is the 4th day of issue. There is not a category for "first day of sale at the philatelic sales unit", we just use the shorthand "Second Day Cancel" as an umbrella.

Here are some of my "Second Day" DC cancels SOTN. Some of them may be 3rd or 4th day like the August 28th example, but I don't have a separate page for "Second Day cancels unless the First Day was on a Friday or Saturday".

I've been collecting the ADDRESS YOUR MAIL... slogans for a few years. This week a welcome addition was an example of the 4-line version from Atlanta, Sta. B. This is my first Atlanta example. I note in PAYNE a single listing for dater number 5 and only a single date shown. My example is dater 1, 03-13-31.

Bob Payne was a legend in machine cancel collecting, although like most of us, his interest was keener in older cancels and slogans. My copy of the Payne slogan catalog is a pre-publication draft not listing Atlanta at all. Clearly the completeness of routine slogans in the 1930s is less complete than the earlier material. Finding unlisted towns, or dials, or killers, or range of use would not be surprising for this pioneering work.

As an example, the draft version I have here lists Cleveland's dial 2 with a range of Feb 5, 1921 to March 4, 1940, yet these two examples from 1921 and 1922 have different dials and different killers (compare the alignment of the D over the R at the lower right corner). They should have separate listings, but what should that listing be? Is my Feb 3, 1921 a new type than the Feb 5, 1921 book listing from 2 days later, or just an earlier use? And when did the killer change? I don't know these answers without more examples to compare.

One with the slogan text ground-out, (unlisted in the draft copy):

And two city-specific versions:

Thank you, John, for your kind response.

It has been my observation that the dater dials for international machines, at least at this time period, were replaced each year. I would like to find examples for 1921 for all the dater numbers :) to give me a starting point to identify the individual slogan dies that initially came into use. Until that time, I am content to arrange them by year and dater number.

I have found that seasonal slogans, when replaced, were not necessarily replaced by the same ADDRESS slogan die.

It can become a madhouse for sure.

Jeff.

Here are a couple more recent slogan cancels from here in Oregon. Apparently Thunderegg Days is still a big deal in Nyssa (pronounced "Nissa"). Thundereggs, in case you are not a rockhound, are a form of geode.

Cancel slogan "Dog Bite Awareness" applied on suburban Chicago mail in June 2024.
The dog depicted looks like a good boy, though looks can be deceiving.
