Started My Newfoundland Collection Yesterday - Need Help

As I was saying, I bought my first Newfoundland stamps at a stamp expo yesterday. It seems it's the next logical step in pursuing my Canada stamp collection.

I've only collected Canadian stamps in the past, so I'm not familiar with watermarks. Can anyone help me on the subject?

Depending on what you picked up the 1860 through 62 printings were potentially watermarked . With the value differences if picked up at a show they were likely searched already but possibly not. The later printings such as the pictorial issue 1 $2 were not watermarked yet issue #3 is watermarked with coat of arms. The definitive issues were all watermarked 1932-37 with the arms watermar so no question with them , sir humphrey gilbert issues all watermarkedjubilee and coronations also all watermarked as well as most issues (re issues) up to 1944. I have many duplicates of newfoundland and it is a very difficult area to fulfill to completion especially with all the re-issues. The good thing that I've noticed is alot of the pence issues have recently become availiable at lower prices but there is forgeries especially in the higher values. If you end up with any doubles and want to work out a trade let me know . Some values are very difficult and high priced yet others within the same series are far less. I was going to sell my entire provinces but am liking the challenge to much. Hoping for one of those not listed properly groupings I can scoop at a really good price. Definatly an area that should give you a year or two of hunting depending on you stamp account.

Another interesting thing to keep your eyes opened for is the re-entries which generally are not valued at least in my unitrade but are sought after.

Thanks everyone...but unfortunaltly none of the above helps me in finding out more about watermarks...is it visibel to the naked eye? Do I have to look at it in front a bright light? Can it be seen on a mint and a used stamp. That's the kind of answer I'm looking for.

Thank you very much mch99. Next time I'll go to my stamp shop I'll look for watermark fluid. I've never seen it before...or maybe I wasent looking!

Minesweeper, you're welcome. Just remember to make sure that the cap on the detection fluid is on tight otherwise it will evaporate.

And get one of the special watermark trays, ordinary plastic will dissolve. Ceramic works OK but should be black.

Some people use Ronsonol lighter fluid but that is flammable and toxic to smell too much, ventilate well while using.

Some watermarks are easier to see than others. Laying the stamp face down on a black surface sometimes works (without using fluid) or shining a light through. The more used to it you are the easier it becomes.

Does anyone know if the watermarks on the newfoundland stamps are easy to spot?

Here are a couple images of the 4cent silver jubilee with crown watermark. The one scan is not altered and the other has been enhanced to bring it out more. Generally the crown watermarks are easily seen. Now that you've broughten up the topic I have to go back and check a few myself. Unitrade list 4 different watermarks crown with cc underneath, coat of arms 2 figures standing beside a coat of arms shield with a right facing moose above, third looks like the crown in the pictures and the last is simply text "stacey Wise with 1858 underneath. The last depending on the size of the text on the paper would likely be the difficult one to find and be the ones noted with higher value. As with other canadian stamps made with bothwell paper sometimes only 1 letter or even half of a letter from the word will show as the text watermark was large and spread across the full pane rather than each stamp. Hope this helps a little but for the general issues that all have the watermarks you should be able to see without fluid. I'll do a bit more research myself and like I said I have multiples of many so we may be able to trade.

I have the 4 cents silver jubilee, I think it's my only watermarked stamp. I'll have to go and see if I can see it.

As for trades, I'm up for it, but I only collect mint no hinge stamps

If this is true it looks like you won't need much watermark fluid for your study of Newfoundland stamps.

On a sheet of watermarked issue stamps, is it all the stamps of the sheet that are watermarked visible ?

Sylvain: Not at all. The Newfoundland watermark is not very densely spaced, so you can find stamps without a watermark that were just in a space between the actual marks.
