Confederate Fakes

I have noticed that several posters have had problems with Confederate fakes.

Here is an image of the earliest known Confederate facsimiles. They were printed and sold by Samuel S. Upham. He printed then between March 12, 1862 and August 1, 1863. These fake are relatively common and are often offered on ebay as genuine stamps. I will also try to added images of the genuine stamps.

This may be an unfair request, but... would you consider putting some of them side-by-side? What most collectors really need is to have the fake and genuine stamps side-by-side and a pointer or two on what to look at to quickly distinguish between the fake and genuine stamps.

Most collectors are like I am with flowers. I really can't tell a rose from a tulip (other than both of them are not ultramarine) and I end up sneezing at all of them.

If you would be willing to do that here, I (and I'm sure many others) would be greatly appreciative. I know there are already several sites that do this for several forgeries, but it would be nice to have a decent sampling put together here in this thread?

Yes, definitely. A chance to compare would be incredibly useful.
I recent notified a British seller about forgeries like these he was selling as authentic. He appreciated the information and put a notice on his listing. He still made a couple of hundred dollars on the set. They are collectible in their own right.

Was just watching an episode of "Pawn Stars" last night and the comment was made that anything to do with the Confederacy (i.e. stamps, coins, documents, memorabilia, weapons, etc., etc.) have more known fakes than originals, so it seems the fakes have flooded the market so greatly that anything "Confederate" has to be accompanied by documentation by experts or it's potential value will be questioned.

Along the lines of this thread... I'm trying to determine whether a particular set of Confederate stamps are bogus. I have been able to find this one online listed as a forgery:




Also in my collection is a set of four similar but different Confederate stamps that I have not been able to locate in Scott's or online:




My assumption is they set of four is also a forgery considering the similarities in the frame. Particularly, the letter D in Paid is a dead on match for the black 3 forgery. Is anyone familiar with the set of forgeries with numerals in red?
