I read Skilo's excellent thread on the topic. It inspired me to work with my own 1p's. This one is driving me crazy (aside from the scissored perfs).

By Skilo's thread I read this as Die 2 (redrawn). The lion is fully shaded. My catalog (Scott) states that this design was first issued in August of 1912 on paper with watermark 33 (crown and GvR).

This one is postmarked July (no day) 1912. Most mysteriously, the paper is watermark 30.

Any advice on this one, please?

And then I re-read his thread and it all makes sense. *sigh*

Edit: Just to confirm, this would be the SG341 Die 2 Scarlet.

smauggie, you state that your stamp has watermark 33 so according to skilo's chart of which I have pasted the die 2 portion, your stamp should be SG#345.

Thank you mhc99.

I too have a Downey Head question.
Just returned from a visit to my inlaws. My father-in-law, a gentleman in his early 80s, showed me a collection he had of postcards mailed by his father during WWI (he was wounded at the Somme). A couple of these had Downey Head KGV stamps on them, but were postmarked in 1917.
I know it's not unusual to save stamps or use what you've got lying around, but considering how unpopular these were, do you experts think it unusual that they would have such a relatively late postmark?

And no, he didn't offer them to me for my collection, sadly.

Hi JamesW,

That is very late usage and I would absolutely love to see those postcards. Next time you pop around to your father-in-law's place check to see that the '7' in 17 isn't really a smudgy '1' and please take a picture if you would be so kind!

Have a good one,

Skilo54

Love to skilo, but they are in Vancouver, we are north of Toronto. Was a week long trip.
Hope to see them again. Some day...some day.

tefloncinco, the answer is definitely no, not all kings are Downey Heads.
Check out this other thread started by Skilo54 for a wonderful history and overview of the stamp.
