Yes, my Great Britain obsession continues . . .

1881 Queen Victorial 5d.
She's a bit bruised, but it was the cancel that caught my eye.

And it has me perplexed. Was this stamp really mailed in 1917?

The minute I saw it (and saw that I could pick it up for less than 10% of catalog) I snapped it up.

Now I am driving myself bananas trying to decode that parcel post circular cancel. I managed to isolate it . . .

I already have a better example of this stamp in my collection, but the color of the cancel caused me to adopt this (admittedly creased) 1887 Jubilee QV Shilling. All of the parcel cancels I have seen have been black.

Any reason why this one is bright blue? (Irish nationalism perhaps?)

Thanks!

Bright blue

Looks Violet to me.

The last two are rubber parcel hammers,
No special reason for violet ink
that I can think of.

Hi Smauggie,

You're first stamp looks like an upside-down LOMBARD ST postmark from London.

This would turn the "17" into "L1" or something similar.

Thanks Nigel.

Now that I have gotten my "KEVII to KGVI Specialized Catalogue" (2005), I have misplaced my QV specialized catalogue. (Notice I am including the ue's just to make you anglophiles happy).
