This 4.50 schilling stamp (Mi #2041) of Austria was issued on October 4, 1991 as a part of the "folk Customs" series. It depicts a Tirolean cattle farmer and his herd moving down a mountain on their annual ceremonial drive. From suedtirol.info, "Every Indian summer on the high pastures has to come to an end. Herdsmen and livestock prepare to return to their winter quarters in the valley, often welcomed back with an exquisite rural festival...Herdsmen and shepherds decorate their cows and sheep with bells and artistically plaited garlands before droving them down to the valley and leading them through the village." |
