This appears to be a port Arthur & Dairen overprint from about 1948-49. It's somewhat similar to SG NE52, but is not listed. Can anyone read it?

The stamp itself is from Manchukuo,
I believe these come with thousands of overprints.

rod222, you[re right. There were some 3,000 handstamped local overprints. But this stamp is of the Port Arthur & Dairen type issued in 1948/49, not the local handstamped overprints, which were issued from 1945-47.

Have you got an image of NE 52 in your catalogue? It's very similar.

The character at the bottom in brackets is 'Mu' as in Mutankiang - a river in the (old) Kirin Province.

Should have added that the rest of the overprint is simply 'Republic of China' and 'Revalued to 50 cents'.

The greatest number of Port Arthur and Dairen scans residing in one place that I've found to date is here:

http://www.manchukuostamps.com/Port...ndDarien.htm

We've linked to other places on that site before, and it is a great resource for Manchukuo.

OK, finally overcame my natural idleness, and ran it to earth in Chan. He lists it as MOSJ.25A.2 - from Mudanjiang (or Mutankiang) in Sungkiang (or Songjiang) Province. No date, but it's one of the first two issues listed for Mutankiang. He prices the set, including a 50c on 1f brown at $US3.

Brilliant research, guys!

I thought the bit in brackets would be the key.

Thanks so much.
