Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV) Pharaoh of Egypt, husband to the above mentioned Queen Nefertiti and possibly the father
or more likely father in law of Tutankhamen.

This Egyptian stamp commemorates the Frenchman Jean-François Champollion who
deciphered the hieroglyphs inscribed on the Rosetta Stone by
comparing the identical texts on the tablet, one being Ancient Greek.

Without this discovery our knowledge about Ancient Egypt
would be much less than we know now.

I remember reading about this when I was a kid and for
some time after my main historical interest was Ancient Egypt.

Another interesting point is the fact that the Egyptian
government wants the tablet back from the British Museum.

Similar story with the Nefertiti bust which is now in Berlin's Neues Museum.

Everybody wants their stuff back, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Italians (Romans??) the Turks, the Iranians etc etc.

There's going to be a lot of empty Museums in Europe & America
if that happens.

I have just posted some nice scans in the above mentioned link!

So, I guess no need to re-post the same scans in this thread as well.

Cheers

James - Well, as this thread was created for Egypt themed stamps, which I think of as a legitimate topical subject in itself, I intend to keep on posting my own examples right here.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting an Egyptian dog statue, designed and engraved by Jacques Combet, and issued by Monaco on April 28, 1967 to publicize the Congress held in Monaco earlier that month of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), an international federation of kennel clubs based in Thuin, Belgium, Scott No. 662.

Hmmm... here's an idea: sand textured stamps! Make them lick & stick, and put the sand on BOTH sides of the paper!

Of course you do have the right to post your own examples in your own thread!

I just wanted to avoid duplicate posts. Thus, I just mentioned where I've contributed my scans ...

Anyway, I'll post two here as well to support your thread

Hope you like them ...

lithograving - Thanks. I have noticed that on ancient Egyptian statues of dog-like creatures, they are usually depicted with long snouts and ears, as on your stamp, probably because they are actually hyenas. This one issued by Monaco struck me as rather unusual because it is most definitely a dog!

Nells250 - Um, OK. You get to have the first go...

james - Nice ones. Thanks for sharing.

Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting the monumental statues of Pharoah Ramses II and his wife, Nefertari, at Abu Simbel, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by Ivory Coast on March 7, 1964 to publicize UNESCO and promote the safeguard of these Nubian monuments, Scott No. C27.
