Over the course of time I have kept pairs of different stamps and samples of stamp plus label which are most likely from Booklet panes. Can anyone help me to identify the booklet issues that they come from - particularly the dates for these issues?

Hindenburg 6 Pfg and 4 Pfg

These are Michel 516 X/514 X, Scott 419/417, from Feb 1934. They are the only issues from this set that were issued in a mixed-value roll. The 6/4 combo can only be found in the roll, as there was no booklet that contained both.

Hindenburg 8 Pfg and 12 Pfg

A couple possibilities with this pair.

If they have a waffle watermark

Michel 485/387, Scott 404/406, from Apr 1933. They were issued together in a booklet, but not in that configuration (8 over 12).

Michel HB78 Pane from booklet MH33

The stamps for the booklets were printed in sheets, then cut. These sheets can sometimes still be found intact. Since this pair is in the inverse arrangement from the booklet pane, they were likely cut from the full sheet, rather than from a booklet.

Michel MHB31

Michel catalogs this pair as S112.

Michel S112

If they have a swastika watermark

Michel 517X/519X, Scott 420/422, from Feb 1934. As before, they were issued together in a booklet, but not in that configuration (8 over 12).

Michel HB97 Pane from booklet MH38

As before, since this pair is in the inverse arrangement from the booklet pane, they were likely cut from the full sheet, rather than from a booklet.

Michel MHB50

Michel catalogs this pair as S201.

Michel S201

Hindenburg 6 Pfg and 8 Pfg

These are Michel 516X/517X, Scott 419/420, from Feb 1934. They were issued in a booklet.

Michel HB92 Pane from booklet MH37

The uncut sheet is also a possibility.

Michel MHB45

Michel catalogs this pair in this arrangement as S159.

Michel S159

Kant 15 Pfg

This is Michel 391, Scott 356, from 1926. With the "X" field attached, it's from booklet pane HB53.

Michel HB53 pane from booklet MHMH22

In this configuration, Michel catalogs these as W23.

Michel W23

Hindenburg 5 Pfg and 6 Pfg

These are 515X/516X, Scott 418/418, from Feb 1934. They can be found in this configuration either in the booklet pane:

Michel HB92 pane from booklet MH37

It could also be from the uncut sheet.

Michel MHB45

In this configuration, Michel catalogs these as W69.

Michel W69

Hindenburg 5 Pfg and 8 Pfg

These are Michel 515X/517X, Scott 418/420, from Feb 1934. It can also be found in pane HB92 from booklet MH37, and uncut sheet MHB45.

In this configuration, Michel catalogs these stamps as W70.

Hindenburg 6 Pfgs

This is Michel 516, Scott 419, from Feb 1934. To be found in this configuration, it has to have been removed from the booklet sheet before it was cut into panes.

Michel MHB51

Once cut into panes, it was only two stamps tall.

Michel HB99 pane from booklet

In this configuration, Michel catalogs these stamps as S210.

Michel S210

Hitler 6 Pfgs

This is Michel 785, Scott 510, from Aug 1941. They are from Michel MHB70 uncut sheet.

Michel MHB70

The sheet was cut into booklet panes.

Michel HB120 booklet pane, from booklet MH48

In these configurations, Michel catalogs them as S283, S284, and W154.

Hitler 4 Pfg and 6 Pfg

These are Michel 783/785, Scott 508/510, from August 1941. They were sold in this format in 1942.

Michel catalogs these as S290.

Michel S290

They were sold in rolls which came in configurations of 2 stamps + 6 spaces, 5 stamps + 4 spaces, and 11 stamps + 4 spaces.

Hope this helps!

I believe the basic Michel Germany catalog list all the possible pairs and strips of 3 with their own catalog number. Beyond strips of 3 are not listed. Booklet panes are listed but not all the possible blocks. S numbers for vertical, W numbers for horizontal.

You could probably pick up a 10 year old catalog cheap on ebay if these items interest you.

Jeff,

I wish they were mine. The sheets alone cat for $7,000+. The photos are from Michel's booklet catalog.

And I missed one possibility, BTW. The 8/12 Pfg Hindenburgs could also be from sheet MHB52, which was cut into pane HB100, from booklet MH39.

Sorted through them by your instructions, checking watermarks and such. I believe I have them straight now, noting the dual possibilities as well, and I have also pirated your pictures to go into the album along with the stamps. Again, thank you and excellent, excellent advice and information.

I had to shrink the pictures quite a bit for posting, so if you needed higher resolution shots for your album, just let me know.

Thanks for the offer, Postmaster. I did check the quality of the prints I made and they are just fine for the album as they are.

backroads,

I'll add the photos that I missed for MHB52, HB100, and MH39 when I get back to my reference books.

backroads,

Here are the two stragglers that I missed. If the 8/12 Pfg Hindenburgs are Michel 517X/519X, Scott 420/422, they could also be from sheet MHB52 or its pane HB100.

Here is a link to some files about this very topic. I think you will find the information extremely helpful. There are catalog numbers, photos of the stamps and covers to the booklets. It also has printable album pages and are all free. They are for personal use only.

These are great files and anyone who collects WWII German booklets will be very happy.

Enjoy.
