Poor Italy

Poor Italy my Grandmother used to say (in Italian) with virtually no natural resources and not enough farmland to feed its population..by the time they got into the colonization business England,France,Portugal and Germany had the good real estate locked !

Germany? The colonial club fixed that too.

No colonies were allowed for anyone except the UK, USA, and their allies.

Whoa! Didn't they have the fertile plains of Ethiopia?

Russ, they did for a while..another war in Africa that world powers ignored...well they didnt like it..but didn't do much about it until WW 2 !

My Italian grandfather used to say "poor Brazil, with this brazilians" in Italian too.

Because they came from the Poor Italy, but were very disappointed with brazilian people at the time that had so blessings from the nature but didn't know/wanted to use it well

It is still like grandpa said... unfortunately.

The USA has never been a colonial power as it is defined under the European model. The USA never colonized any territory as a matter official policy. The territories were added due to spoils of war.
Mexico lost Texas because many disenfranchised Americans settled there to escape the law in the USA. California was taken via war with Mexico & the gold rush that brought the Americans. Hawaii was a commercial private business ie the Dole Co. before becoming a USA territory.
Liberia was a series of USA colonies set up by abolitionists with the idea of repatriating former slaves back to Africa.
Cuba was not even kept. Philippines was giving self-government as a Commonwealth under the USA which they did not have under Spain.
Guam was simply a coal station then a airfield for crossing the Pacific.
If these are colonies then Australia a colonial power too with the Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Is,Cocos (Keeling) Is, Ashmore & Carier Is. & Coral Sea Is.!

Albert, Trentino where my mothers people came from sends me a magazine a couple of times a year...it tells of the immigrations of its people to Argentina,Brazil, Mexico,Australia,Canada and the USA..it seems the people from there who immigrated where ever worked hard and made good lives for themselves..they still speak their dialects and keep their old customs..they have Tyrolean conventions every year somewhere in the states or Canada..i have not attended !
