I have a cover that was cancelled in a tiny place in former West Germany called Oberroßbach, presumably in the mid-1950s. The cancel seems a little unusual, having no date, being in purple, and having the inscription '22b' in a large circle, which suggests that the information was significant. Does anyone know what kind of cancel this is?

so called "land cancel" or "help cancel" from the beginning of BRD -- special collectors exists, but very difficult to find. Normally collected on complet covers with full inside. Value not listed anywhere, but if you find a freak for those you can get 5 Euro.

I do not know where this smal town will be exactly, never heard,, perhaps have a look for google for a special descrition of north, south or west germany.

Please excuse his English, it is his second language.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the information, guys!

I have a whole swag of covers addressed to people living in Oberroßbach, but only one that was actually posted there and this is the one.

bobgggg, sorry for the delayed expression of appreciation!

BAYERN1kreuzer, it's odd, then, that there is no other cancel on this cover.

BAYERN1kreuzer, while I have the attention of a German collector, can I ask you whether you've ever seen such a red copy of Mi. Nr. 145 as this?

It seems extremely unusual to me. What do you think?

BAYERN1kreuzer, thanks for checking your copies of Mi. Nr. 145.

I have quite a few copies of this stamp. No matter what the shade, I find that it is always distinctively 'lilarot.' This is true even of 145 F, which Michel just calls red. I don't own this stamp myself, but I've seen quite a few copies on online auctions sites, such as Schwanke, and the colour is, in fact, not very different from the normal colour. It is NOT red.

However, there is no 'lila' component to my stamp. It is fire engine red, and is, in fact, the same colour as most 10pf red Germanias.

I find this very, very odd!
