The thread is over 6 years old now and I would like to thank all participants who have posted or read the topic over that time. Lately, Primoz and Nethryk have been keeping the thread alive and a special thanks to them.

THE BEDFORD FLAG.

The oldest known Flag of the United States was supposedly flown by the Bedford Minuteman Cavalry [Massachsetts] at the Battle of Lexington and Concord and was the first flag to fired upon by the British. Dates from the early 18th Century.
The latin motto reads top to bottom on one side and Bottom to top on the other. The sword is also positioned differently being over the motto on one side and under it on the other.

PAUL HOY HELMS

Baker, businessman and sports philanthropist. His company sent the first bread to the moon when they won the contract to supply Apollo 11 in 1969. They also supplied the bread for the Olympic village in Los Angeles, 1932.

The Poster stamp above is part of a set of 50, sponsored by Helms and includes 17 Flags and 33 autographs and Medals of U.S. Presidents. They were given to customers at Helms Bakery during the 1940's together with an album.

I will show more later. A beautiful-looking series.

Happy Birthday to Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821)! Here is an image of a stamp depicting Bonaparte holding aloft a French tricolor flag while trying to inspire his troops to cross the bridge to attack the Austrians on November 15, 1796 at the Battle of Arcole, Italy, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris based upon a painting of the episode by French artist Baron Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835), and issued by France on November 11, 1972, Scott No. 1352, Y&T No. 1730, plus an image of Antoine Gros's original painting, Bonaparte au Pont d'Arcole. Note: The flag that Bonaparte is (accurately) shown holding in the painting was the standard of the 2nd Battalion of the 51st Brigade half-line (which still bore the number of the 99th demi-brigade from which the 51st came). I suppose that we must chalk up the battered tricolor on the stamp to artistic license.
