My complete topical collection (so far) of Henderson Motorcycle advertising covers from the Portuguese colonies in east Africa... I'm having a heck of a time finding more, so am thinking about expanding to Excelsiors.

That 2c Jackson certainly does have a grill which, on a quick point count I count as 14x17. That would make it an E grill, Sc #87, which cats at $300 on cover.

If you are able, perhaps you could give us a more detailed scan of the stamp only, so we can verify the point count. But start a new thread with it, since this is kind of an aside for a thread about showpieces.

eriekillercancel The stamp wasn't forgotten, it either fell off or had help in coming off, the missing part of the CDS and the obliterator show us where the stamp was.

There are two ways of quoting some one's post, the first ( and slowest ) is to type it out using html ( in this case, just the proper quotation marks ) use this= [QUOTE]paste in what you =what to quote and close it by typing this [*/QUOTE] leaving out the red *
The much simpler method is to click on the "Quote" icon in the toolbar above the message area, second icon from right top line following Format, (a page with red arrow), and insert your quote betweeen the quotation marks. Hang in there, and keep asking questions.

If you click on the "reply to topic" link it will bring up a text entry box with all kinds of control options around it. The second to last icon in the "Format" group above that text box is the link for entering the quotation markup. Any text appearing between the markup tags:


It will not be in such a box on "Preview" but will convert on the final post.

As others have said, I took this topic to mean that you're showing your favorite items, not necessarily your most valuable.

Favorite? yes I'm sure, but I think there is a little more to it than that or the header would have said, "Show us your favorite stamp."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a "show piece" is anything you think might be impressive to others. Value is impressive to most people, but it certainly isn't the only reason something might get oohs and aahs. In the exhibiting game there is a much disputed parameter of evaluation called "philatelic importance." Among the stamps of any given country, not all items are equally significant. We see that differential here in the forum by what kinds of things get discussed and what topics quickly die.

But for an item to be a true showpiece, there is something about it that gets the attention of others. If that's your favorite item, then so be it. But the two are not necessarily the same.

I think the term "show piece" can take on many different meanings to different people...

Historically or philatelically important
Valuable
Unique or unusual
Visually or aesthetically remarkable

The earliest known use (EKU) for that slogan cancel (#OMS011) is Jan, 29th, 1921. The latest known use (LKU) is May 14th 1943. It's a pretty early one.
