Thoughts On This 1862 Error Stamp

Just found this 1862 stamp... any thoughts to what it could be worth? Thanks!!

As far as I'm concerned its worthless like this.

This looks like someone took a sheet or large block of a Confederate issue and cut it up to make grade 100J singles and this was part of the leftover severed stamps. Then PSE perhaps encapsulated some of the leftover waste with a special labelling as a remembrance or favor for that person. I agree that it seems to be a curiosity only and pretty worthless.

Agree with Rhett 100 percent. This is waste leftover , essentially worthless in my opinion, but also suggestive that a dealer or collector may be trying to sell the waste in a not so ethical way to unfamiliar collector. Strange how PSE encapsulated it without any identification of the stamp except "Confederacy". By taking the waste and encapsulating, someone unfamiliar with this process may think there is more value here and not see it for what it is....cut up waste!

rgstamp is right. Put it up for auction on ebay and a few bidders may go crazy over it, just because it's in a PSE case.

PSE gave-away these slabbed Civil War stamps as a promo at the APS Stampshow a few years back. They were handing them out like business cards. Value less than $1 in my opinion. Here is a scan of the #65 they gave me. I might have one of the confederate slabs somewhere also.

Probably a reprint to boot, so could not be identified with a regular CSA Scott number.

Why would PSE be handing these out if they were not connected to the person cutting up these blocks? How else would they get a hold of this?

And if they are connected to the person cutting up the blocks, is there some kind of conflict of interest? are they, in fact, grading their own material?

Not to mention I really hate it when people cut up blocks like this and destroy 9 stamps so they can have one "showpiece'.

Per SPQR, it's just promotional advertising. A sample. A souvenir. No cat#, no grade or grading number, no attempt to imitate their stamp slabs. The stamp show equivalent of junk mail.

Somewhere in this forum I started a rant about grading imperforated stamps. All grading of imperforate stamps accomplishes is enticing people to butcher blocks or multiples to grab the 1- grade 100 while sacrificing stamps that most collectors would welcome in their collection. It's a joke.

I also agree that sacrificing relatively good stamps to make one "perfect" stamp seems very short sighted.
