To see the whole thread on the above U.S. 'stitch watermark' pic, just google "stitch watermark". When I do this it is the first site that shows in the list. Not sure about posting other sites here, so all I can tell you is it rhymes with Obama. Hope you can figure it out and hope I did not break any rules.

Nodelli- Posting links to informative info is completely fine and can be done by clicking the insert hyperlink button, copying and pasting the complete link between the two "url" that show up.

I think with the little known about this topic any information is good information. After reading more it seems that it is possible for any stamp with paper made by the process to potentially have a stitch watermark. I would imagine as time went on from the first making of wove paper the "stotching" process also improved hence why it is generally only found in older stamps.

Nitrolures, thanks for info on showing links. Being fairly new here, I did not want to get off on the wrong foot.
BTW, will be doing a little muskie fishing tomorrow on Lake St. Clair. Considering your name and impressive logo, thought it is something of interest to you.

Starting to go through my older Canada for this variety. Has anyone personally come across one? I've been looking at images online and they seem to be visible to the naked eye. It'd sure save a lot of time and watermark fluid if that were the case.

Can't say I have seen one yet, but continue to look. I think it would be hard to see with the 'naked eye'. If so, there would be alot more pics of them than there is now. One day I will find one, .....one day.

Hello all. The stitch watermark on Small Queens is tough to find (rare)and difficult to see. I have both horizontal and vertical on the 2 cent green (#36) plus a vertical on a 3 cent copper (37). I tried to buy the stitch watermarked stamp from the McNaught collection but was seriously outbid when it sold at the Firby auction in 2009. A clear photo of the watermark can be seen on page 33 of the BNAPS presentation of Herb's gold medal exhibit.
The watermark appears as a series of short (3-4 mm)parallel lines. As soon as I figure how to attach a photo, I will do so.

Thanks gporch,
I dug this up from the Firby auction you mentioned. The first photo is what I copied from the site. The second, I played with picture settings to bring out the stitch design.
You must be a happy puppy owning these stamps after seeing what this stamp went for.

Before I start sticking my early Canada in watermark fluid, is there any danger with ink running? I use UniSafe fluid. I've never heard of Canada having ink problems but want to double check

The reality is that any early stamps may contain a stitch watermark . The stitch was in the paper making process where they double stitched the wire mesh that made the paper. Just because only so many are listed does not mean there are not others to be found on different issues. Any old paper making process would produce this wether it US, Canada or abroad.

To stamps101:
There is no problem with watermark fluid on Canadian or BNA stamps
