Last fall I spent a couple of weeks in Austria and was lucky enough
to see some of the amazing exhibits in Heeresgeschichtliches Museum

The Museum of Military History in Vienna displays weapons,armor, flags, paintings, documents etc etc
in various rooms starting from the Thirty Years War up to WWII.

I took a few pics of the automobile they were assassinated in, the Archdukes' bloodied uniform and
the pistols which were used.

In the pic below one of the bullet holes is visible.

Received this letter recently which has
a SS issued for the 175th
anniversary of the first postage stamp.

Pity that the Penny Black was not printed via engraved
as was the original Penny Black.

I realize that the Austrian State Printer no longer has
the capabilities to print engraved stamps but the least they
could have done was to use what they call Etch-Art which
is the poor mans substitute (ersatz) for engraving.

since I have neglected this thread for awhile.

This SS was issued for the 300th anniversary of the
The Battle of Kahlenberg (Vienna) 1683 when Imperial troops,
Saxons and Polish cavalry led John III Sobieski, King of Poland
defeated the invading Ottoman Turks.
This was actually the second siege of Vienna by the Turks.
The Siege of Vienna in 1529 was the first attempt by the Ottoman Empire, led by Suleiman the Magnificent to conquer all of Europe.






Here are a couple of pics I took in the Museum of Military History in Vienna.

This Souvenir Sheet was issued in 1987 for the
150th Anniversary of Railways in Austria.

This SS commemorates the 200th Anniversary of the
Battle of Aspern where the Austrian army led by
Archduke Charles defeated Napoleons troops.
It was one of the few Austrian victories and a month later
Napoleon defeat them at the Battle of Wagram.
