If you haven't seen it, there is a nice History of the US Postal Service on this website:

The 84-page book is available as a PDF download.

Also, the pages includes some other interesting statistics about the USPS, including a table of historical rates for first-class postage, revenues and expenses, and mail volume.

I have that book, it is interesting. When it was released I requested it to be mailed to me and got it for free.

Nice publication, but unfortunately it's a bit dated. One page on the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee still reads in this book that, except for US Presidents, a person must be dead 10 years to be depicted on a postage stamp. That was later changed to 5 years.

Well, it does say 2006 in the title, so I guess the updates ended there.

Maybe they do a second edition,
