I'm working through some old Schaubek album pages that came along in a box of mostly Russian stamps. There is one example of this stamp:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...330515023538

The person on ebay who's hawking the pane of four on the link, and whoever went through and catalogued my album page last, say it is Scott C126, probably because of the 14 perf, although C126 is supposed to be dark brown, and there is no way that that is dark brown. If forced to choose from Scott, I'd go with C135, which is maroon (a better color match), but perf 13.5 (which mine is definitely not). Schaubek , however, has it on the same page as the Scott 998 definitive set, with a date of 1971, which does not match anything in Scott. And someone penciled in 1558 the beneath the album photo, which might be Sassone, might be Michel, or something else entirely, to which I have no access.

Can anyone help?

A picture might help.
Your saying that your stamp is perf.14? (There is also a perf.14x13 SC#126b) If you don't thing the colour of your stamp is dark brown, but closer to maroon, perhaps it has faded over the last 60 years. Colour can fade or degrade over time if the stamps are not stored properly. Just a suggestion.

Oh, it's 14 all around. And the color *has* faded, but clearly from the color in the link above, not from anything that could be called dark brown.

Solved. No 1971: I was faked out by the previous owner of the page putting a 1000 lira stamp on a 100 lira image. I found an incredible site-- www.ibolli.it--which has a complete catalog with beautiful images of all Italian stamps, from which it is obvious that mine is the 1948: the color in their illustration is the same, although there is no way on earth that it can be considered brown. They also call the 1955 stamp "bruno", which Scott calls maroon.
