They are no prefect solution, 2 post binders don't stay flat open in the first and last parts of them |

dbuss, the pages in the Harris Liberty album for the modern stamps have the blocks on one page and the singles on another? Is the paper thin? I would like to get an album with heavier paper that won't warp due to the hinges and pages that will lay flat. However, if the Harris Liberty is the only option with singles I might have to get it anyway. |

Just purchased 3 Scott Platinum US Hingeless albums in very nice condition. 13-ring mechanism is definitely smoother than the 3-ring Mystic American Heirloom Hingeless binders I already started using. While the Mystic Heirloom set is very nice, I will stay away from 3-ring binders after experiencing pages catching on the rings when turning pages. Only problem with my online purchase is the dealer's description indicated the pages cover from 1935 to 1983. But when received on my end the pages begin with 1947. I need 1935 to 1946, so we'll see if the dealer can provide the missing 12 years since Platinum album is out of print. |

The problem is the types of rings they use. Mystic do not use the more expensive ball and socket rings: That being said, having more rings is always better. I believe most European A4 binders have 4 rings. |

Ball & socket rings, huh? So much to learn; so little time! Must say I love my just purchased Scott Platinum 13-ring albums. Pages turn as smooth as baby's bottom. And I love the top insert mounts for ease of use with no pressure on the stamps.
Does anyone buy top-loading clear mounts? I'll need some loose mounts and wonder which manufacturers offer best product? |

For a long time, I used Leuchtturm (Lighthouse) mounts which I purchased from my local dealer. That source has dried out, and I now use Uni-safe mounts which I order online from Arpin Philately. I find that the Uni-safe mounts have a hard-to-beat price/quality value. |

I believe I can help you. In fact, I am quite certain I have a spare Platinum album with those years. I will double-check when I get home tonight and perhaps we can work out some sort of deal. Cheers! Brian |

Hello all!
This particular thread has been invaluable for me - I am just getting back into stamps after a long, LONG, hiatus and my good old Scott National is a bit the worse for wear after over 4 decades of moves, storage, mishandling, so I am trying to decide which album to move to (as well as mounts vs. hingeless vs. hinges.)
I want to thank Rileysan for starting the thread and the great reports he posted and also dcaraz1949 for his sharing his extended efforts to determine which albums he would go with. Dan, you seem to have done everything I would have needed to do to come to a satisfactory conclusion, and thanks especially for your being upfront with your changes of heart - lots of good info contained in your thinking process.
At this point I am likely going to stick with the Scott National until I can find a good deal on Scott Platinum Hingeless with the 13 ring binders - they seem to be the ones that answer most of my needs.
Once again, thanks for all the input - a most excellent source of experience.
All the best, Mike

Should have added this to my previous - if anyone has the Scott Platinum US Hingeless for sale, I would appreciate hearing about it via PM.
Thanks,
|

Hi MikeA, I've been away from this Forum for a bit. Welcome to SCF! As mentioned in my comparisons of hingeless US albums, I concluded that the top-loading clear mounts are far easier to use since inserting your stamps puts them under no added pressure as do the split back type mounts. Since some of my collection is mint I also prefer to not devalue stamps with original gum by applying hinges. Finally, despite Rieleysan's warnings about the 3-ring binders, I ordered 2 Mystic American Heirloom Collection albums. Despite their very high overall quality, unfortunately these very nicely manufactured albums have one shortcoming I'd rather not live with. The pages catch repeatedly on the 3-ring mechanism.
I now have 3 out-of-print Scott Platinum albums and appreciate the smooth 13-ring design. Best of luck for you to locate the Platinum album(s) you seek. |

Hello Dan,
Thanks for the welcome! Very happy to have found this group and perhaps more importantly, this thread. It is germane to my situation and has been very interesting reading the various reviews of albums.
Like you, I have only recently come back to stamp collecting and need (want?) to replace my estimable Scott National that has served well for something in excess of 40 years, many of them squirreled away in storage or other poor environments.
Following closely your reasoning and efforts to find the perfect album, I, like you changed my mind a number of times as to which system I would buy.
When you finally 'pulled the trigger' and purchased the Mystic Premium Hingeless American Heirloom Collection I figured I would follow in your footsteps, but no, you then followed up with the post about your being unsatisfied with the three-post binders and obtaining a set of the Scott Platinum Hingeless.
OK, now I know what to get...but alas, not readily available!
A question - are you intending to collect the later issues, those after Scott stopped making the pages for the Platinum? If so, what pages will you use?
All the best, Mike

iHobb used to sell Platinum supplements, but it appears they no longer print them. Personally, I don't collect after the year 2000 so am not too worried about it, but I have seen supplements for sale on ebay up through the year 2006. You may have to look for other options to cover later years ... Brian |

Mike, the other options mentioned by Brian could include not collecting issues after 2006, perhaps because there are so many and almost all are self adhesive, printing Steiner pages yourself and using mounts, and/or using Vario pages or stock books for later issues.

Hello Brian,
I may have given the wrong impression in my last post - actually I have little interest in 'modern' commemoratives, I find the printing garish and often the subjects are obscure to say the least.
In the event I am lucky enough to find a Scott Platinum set, if they contain pages through perhaps ~1960s I will be happy.
So far there is one set on ebay, in my price range, that would fill the bill BUT it is missing the first set of pages, 1847 - 1934, a major failing IMHO as one cannot be sure those pages will ever be available through the second-hand market.
I am seriously considering going with the Mystic Premium Heirloom set as they seem to fulfill most of my requirements and at a very reasonable price.
They may not be perfect, but life is almost never perfect!
All the best, Mike |
