I only collecht unmounted mint. But incorrect soaking can damage the coating and phosphor. Some of the phosphors are part of the coating. What also can happen is that phosphor ink migrates and people start seeing varieties where there are none. If you soak them in water that is not too hot and don't soak them for days, most should remain perfectly identifiable (except of course the gum variety).
