Canada Royal Visit 1939 Saskatoon Labels

With my interest in George VI period cinderellas, I was pleased to obtain these Saskatoon imperforate labels on gummed paper celebrating the Royal Visit to Canada in 1939. The one on the left is apparently quite scarce as it bears the initials 'ER' for Edward VIII (who of course abdicated before the visit took place and was replaced by his brother) so was withdrawn. The one on the right shows the initials 'GR' for George VI. Lastly is a basic illustrated FD cover, bearing the Canada stamp set and an Airmail label on the front but with three different cinderella labels, including the Saskatoon 'GR' type, on the reverse.





I had not seen the Winnipeg label before so this too is a welcome addition. Chris Wren

Very nice cover! The addition of those poster stamps really make it attractive.

Not surprisingly the original addressee on that cover was a member of the Omaha Philatelic Society and was a specialist in collecting Christmas Seals, Charity Seals, Labels and Poster Stamps, as noted in the quote below:

I too collect the 1939 Royal Visit to Canada, Newfoundland and the US as one of my specialties and this is the first time I have seen these particular labels.

This may have appeared in an earlier thread on George VI coronation material but I thought it also might be of interest in this because of the Winnipeg connection.

Thank you very much WT1 for the information on William Bigger, it's always nice to be able to link these things. And to Backroads, the Canada sheet of stamps did, if I remember, feature on one of my earlier topics and most likely on some by others. I have this sheet, and the Seagram's Whisky sheet with folder. Unlike with the 1937 Coronation, I have not seen that many covers bearing Visit labels; maybe just that I have not seen many or that they were not used so much on envelopes?

These are of course the UK 1937 Coronation cinderellas but overprinted for the 1939 Visit. There are also the USA version (both in all three colours as originally issued in the UK):



These have been seen elsewhere by an eminent Royal Visit collector but otherwise seem to be very rare. Chris Wren
