Note in the "Standard Catalogue of China & Treaty Ports", 1935:

Tientsin

Quote:
An important city and port of Tientsin with a large population and a strong foreign community could undoubtly have special stamps as other Treaty Ports but this question has never been considered by the Municipality of that town.

According to the Hong-Kong Philatelist of June 1893, stamps with above design, with or without overprint "Postage Due" have been made privately in order to defraud collectors.

The Tientsin stamps mimicked the first issues of the empire issues of 1878, while the overprint mimics the postage due overprint on the Wuhu issues of 1895.

Marvelous information Warrehouse
thank you very much.
The one I saw on ebay had seven bids, so there must be some
interest in these cinderellas/phantoms.

Yes there is a lot of interest. These items may have been to defraud collectors but these items are often rarer then legit stamps they are mimicking.

I have a single 1/2 cent off-cover postage due from a 1935-1940 approval offer; thought at first it would be listed under German offices in China, but no luck in Scott Catalog so assumed it was a genuine local issue-did not consider it bogus because of the low value etc. so I classified this emission as either an unreleased stamp or a fake/bogus issue. Any idea of rarity of these issues of Tientsin, as the workmanship is not too shabby. Does the Chan catalog cover these issues? Thanks. Covermaster

Chan lists the Postage Due overprints as LW7-LW12: the set runs from the ˝ cent to 15 cents. In the last edition, the set was priced at $120 mint. The individual stamps aren't priced.
