The problem I'm starting to have with SCF is that every time someone points out a possible flaw, or something unusual in a stamp, I've got to go running to my stock pile and rifle through to see if I can find something similar. I think I need help.

Anyway, that aside, I think colour shift, or mis-registration of two colours is pretty common, especially when you are dealing with such small pieces of art. The plates are bound to move a little bit.
I found three examples of this stamp with slight shifts in registration, but what I thought interesting was the actual difference in colour between the stamps.

The top two in this picture are perf. 12 (1938-51, exact date not specified). The bottom is perf. 13.5x13 which Scott's dates from 1950 and shows a much lighter colour variation, especially in the red violet.

Nothing earth shattering, but I had to make the trip to the hoard worth while.

There were two easily distinguishable printings of this 6d value.

The first was printed in grey and red-purple.

A later printing in April 1946 was in a distinct grey and red-claret shade.

The 1950 changed perforation was grey and red-purple.

The "exhaust pipe" variety is worth keeping an eye out for - at the back of the car a flaw looks like an exhaust pipe. Murray Payne priced this variety at £140 (mint) four years ago! It is currently unlisted in Stanley Gibbons, but they normally follow Murray Payne after a while.

Plateflaw, what would be the best resource for the color information you shared? I don't see it in SG Empire or Scott Classic, but it is the kind of information that would be nice to have.

Thanks.

Murray Payne's King George VI Postage Stamp Catalogue (CW) lists many shades. It makes good fun looking for them.

Back to the stamps...

There are a few other varieties for the Jamaica 6d. unlisted in both SG and CW.

A major variety is a clear double print of the central vignette - a ghostly outline of a second car can be seen above the car. Over half a dozen examples are known.

The car also has a few other collectible flaws: the "roof spotlight" and "nail in tyre" are both highly descriptive and need little in the way of illustration.
