Received my collection of Eaton's Fine Paper cindys in the mail from Mr. Londonbus today. Was very excited. They are quite beautiful, and a nice addition to my infant cinderella collection.
Then I just saw these counting down on ebay, while taking a quick glance before going outside to replace a couple of fence posts.

Put out by the American Olympic Committee to commemorate the 1940 Olympic games in Helsinki. Printed by American Bank Note, just like the Eaton's.
Oddly enough, I was just looking at a picture of one of these earlier today in one of my stamp books (a similar set done for 1948 London Games) and thought, they'd be nice to have.
Talk about fate!
I'd better get outside and start on the fence. My prince is probably waiting for me.

That's right. The games were originally to be held in Tokyo, but a threatened boycott caused the IOC to switch and award the games to the runnerup, Helsinki. Then they were canceled with the outbreak of the war.
This may also explain why the AOC reused this design to promote the 1948 London Games.
Guess I'll have to find a set of those to go with!

Great looking set, I'd better leave before I too get the cindy bug.
Isn't that the LA Coliseum in the pic? That was the site of the 1932 summer games. Wonder if the design was based on a photo and an actual race.
