What may be interesting to note is that the language on the knight's shield is a really old fashioned type of Dutch. Still in use in the 1920's obviously, but nowadays that phrase would surely raise a lot of eyebrows.

Yes, since 1934 when the Dutch language was overhauled it would have been: Koopt bij de_ middenstand. When I grew up and while my father was a blue collar worker (Housepainter) we detested the "middenstand-- the persons who owned the stores-- as they would not even talk to us! Middenstand was the medium social status; manufacturers and large factory owners were the "rich" then the midden =(middle) stand and then the rest of the world. Hopefully things have changed in the last few years. Jopie

From Herr Google...

Quote:
The term shopkeeper or retailer is defined as someone who sells directly to consumers. Previously there was a need for qualification: the so-called middle class degree . This was required for leading companies in the Vestigingswet fell. It is anyway small independent businesses , a sole proprietorship lead. The distinction with larger companies or businesses operating on a larger scale to make the term is thus often preceded by small , such as petty .

The word derives from the time that the company stands, or social class was divided. The middle class than the middle class of independent entrepreneurs and artisans .
