Scottish Heraldry
Great Britain issued four stamps on July 22, 1987 to celebrate the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Scotland's order of chivalry.
The four stamps continued the theme of heraldry which was first illustrated with a special
stamps issue in 1984. The four stamps mark the 300th Anniversary of the revival of the
Order by King James II in 1687.
The 18p stamp shows the arms of the office of the Right Honourable the Lord Lyon King
of Arms, who administers heraldry on behalf of the Crown in Scotland.
The 22p stamp illustrates the banner used by the sovereign's eldest son when in Scotland.
The arms of the Royal Scotish Academy of Painting, Scripture and Architecture are
featured on the 31p stamp, whilst the 34p shows the arms of the Royal Society of
Edinburgh, which was established in 1783 for the advancement of learning and useful
knowledge.
The stamps were designed by Jeffrey Matthews.
