I wish to clarify some things about what has been written on this thread:

1.- The painting "La Maja desnuda" is very beautiful. I've seen it once in the Prado Museum (Madrd/Spain) and it's much nicer than the stamp. Goya is one of the first "Modern" European Painters.

2.- Sorry to disagree, but Franco didn't revolt against the king (Alfonso XIII). The did so in 1936 to overthrow the Second Spanish Republic, set in 1931 after the king resigned for having lost a peaceful democratic local election. Communist didn't have any significant role in that election, liberal republican, socialists and Catalan nationalists and even anarchists, were more important in 1931 than Communist, who were only a minor party.

3.- Alfonso XIII (known as "thin legs" in Catalonia), was not loved by the people because he supported the Morocco war, fought by the poor for the rich's interest. He also supported the very unpopular military dictatorship of General Miguel Primo de Rivera. That, and many other things caused the king's dismissal.

4.- The sexual appetite of Bourbons, the ruling Spanish dinasty, is well known since long time ago. It affects both males and females of the family. King Alfonso had many mistresses (as his grandson) and most most people know (or guess) some names. I actually do. But this is very unlikely that affected king's popularity, just the opposite. Here, on the Mediterranean sea, know and accept that most men like women and most women like men. You can call it "a weakness" (I don't!). The king having the same weakness of his subjects, just makes we feel that "he's one of us". Nothing to blame or be ashamed of. Just look at Italy and France. We're very far away from Northern European puritanism.
We came from Greece and Rome, were people enjoyed sex; and we still do.

La Maja desnuda it's a fine work of art. The rest is just chatting.

I beg your pardon if I looked too selfish. I was not trying to give lessons to any one, just to clarify a little the facts.

This was discussed in another topic, but I'll put an example here, for anyone who has not seen one...the Goya, a razor blade, a steady hand, and the 3-cent Mother's Day stamp, and you end up with this...

I borrowed the scan from UK ebay, but these pop up from time to time.
