Great topic. Is there a website that describes any of the fakes and forgeries of this series?
Thank you |

Personally, I would pay up to $5 for an unlisted (Michel) plate flaw in sound condition, if it is interesting to me. There are so many plate flaws and printing freaks/errors on Danzig stamps. As far as MNH, MH, CTO, etc. are concerned: I would consider the value (to me) to be about the same, i.e. it would not have any effect on buy/not buy decision, as long as the stamp is undamaged. The ebay listings? I have never bought one; what the sellers are asking is absurd.. |

Danzig's first self-designed stamps:"Proclamation of the Free City of Danzig-sailboat in a frame" issued January 31 / March 11 .1921. From the series of 10 + 3 stamps that I have only the value of 80 pf, it has printing defects. Is it caused by the poor quality of the ink? |

Based on the very detailed information in Gerhard Schueler's Spezialkatalog Der Danzig-Briefmarken and from my collecting experience, I would say that there were all kinds of technical problems with the printing of Danzig's stamps, especially the issues up to the end of the inflationary period. In his book, Schueler describes varieties for this "Proclamation" series, including double perfs, double printings, natural paper flaws, and partial printings due to folded paper. His last statement about varieties says, "verschmierter Druck: Nr. 57" (smeared printing). This shows that the printers had problems with the inking of the 80 pf stamp. The viscosity of the ink more often than not appears to be too thin. Here are #57 and a #65 from my collection; lots of filled areas. |
