I have this one penny from Stellaland and all I know is that this was near Bechuanaland and that Scott does not show the five stamps they produced. Can anyone help? Thanks Jeff

Is it listed as stellaland, cause either I am blind (which is a definite possibility) or it was not in my catalog. And thank you for all the help everyone. - Jeff |

Stellaland was incorporated into British Bechanaland which in turn became part of Cape Colony then South Africa (not Botswana which is what the Bechuanaland Protectorate became after independence).
The stamps are listed under the name "Stellaland" in Scott and under "Bechuanaland" in SG Part 1. |

The Stellaland revenues set consisted of nine denominations: 6d, 1s, 1/6d, 2s, 2/6d, 5s, 10s, £5, £10. The 5s and 10s with pen cancels: Another group of four: 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. These have the JPM monogram overprint in violet. This overprint was applied after a number of revenue stamps were stolen shortly after issue in order to differentiate the official stamps from the stolen ones. Clive |

Clive, can you confirm please. Quote: The Stellaland revenues set consisted of nine denominations: 6d, 1s, 1/6d, 2s, 2/6d, 5s, 10s, £5, £10.
I have the £5 as the top value Revenue. If incorrect, do you have a scan of the £10 ? Thanks. |

Oops Rod, I am not sure what I was thinking, I left out the £1 and mistakenly included the £10 - inflation perhaps The nine denominations should actually be: 6d, 1s, 1/6d, 2s, 2/6d, 5s, 10s, £1, £5. Thanks for noticing, Clive |

Stellaland stamps have been forged; no surprise there. You can use BeeSee's for comparison as it is the genuine 1d shown here: http://stampforgeries.com/forged-st...-stellaland/The genuine are perf 12 but so is one of the forgeries; Robson Lowe says perf 11 1/2 (hmph) but forgeries known to him are perfed slightly different from the genuine. A key is that the letters like E and N are basically square in the genuine, rectangular in the forgeries. Robson Lowe gives EEN PENNY measuring 13.5 mm wide in the genuine. The two confirmed 1d values that I have recorded passing my desk were on thin grayish paper with a clear mesh. Gum was thin and clear enough that the grayish color showed through. Robson Lowe says "bluish to white wove". The 1d is scarce enough and the forgeries are uncommon themselves. Supposedly remainders were sold off when the issue was withdrawn so one would expect more to be out there. Maybe just in South Africa(?) |

A number of characteristics of the genuine stamps can be used to easily differentiate the genuine from forgeries. Things like a ball at the base of the 'R' of REPUBLIEK or a ball at the top of the S of STELLALAND. Further details can be found on my Stellaland Forgeries page. This does not take into account one set of forgeries that were produced from a lithograph stone borrowed or stolen from the original printing firm. As the value tablet was not part of the stone, the value tablets of four values, not including the sixpence, are 1 to 2mm shorter than on the genuine stamps. Remainders of all five values were sold off after the stamps were withdrawn. These consisted of a few thousand of each value except for the 1d red of which there were only a few hundred which probably accounts for the relatively high catalogue price. Despite the scarcity I am surprised at how often these stamps are found on ebay, both genuine and forgeries the latter often listed as genuine. Clive |
