I notice in the official stamp set of Sudan that there is an overprint SG or OSGS. I have some Sudan that are perfinned SG and one AS (Army Service maybe). Does anyone know about these Sudan perfins? Thanks as always Jeff If these can be identified that would be great - thanks - Jeff

These are listed in Gibbons. The SG perfins came between the OSGS overprints (up to 1912) and the SG overprints (in 1936). The AS perfins appeared about the same time. Gibbons says 'The use of [the last of the three sets of SG perfins] on internal official mail ceased in 1932, but they continued to be required for official mail to foreign destinations until replaced by [the first SG overprints] in 1936.' and 'The use of [the AS perfins] on internal Army mail ceased when the Egyptian units were withdrawn at the end of 1924, but existing stocks continued to be used on Army mail to foreign destinations until supplies were exhausted.'

If you post any specimens you want identified, we'll probably be able to give you Gibbons numbers, eventually ...

OK, here are the Gibbons numbers and 2011 cat. prices:

1. SG O29 £1
2. Probably SG A20 (watermark multiple star & crescent) - £0.50. There is also an unpriced variant on the single quatrefoil watermark, SG A20a
3. SG O13 £7.50
4. Depends on watermark: Multi star & crescent is SG O22 (£9); multi SG watermark is SG O26 (£50) (Either way, this seems to be one of the key values of both sets)

Good luck with the watermarks!

thanks so much tonymac. One question. The 4 denomination is half the size of the others and appears to be from the 1921-1936 era as opposed to the others from 1898-1921 and I dont see a watermark on it. Would that change things. I know the scan makes them look the same size but the 4 is about half the size of the others. Thanks again your help is invaluable. - Jeff

Jim, the difference in size of the 4 mils makes no difference. (From 1921, the low - millième - values were all in the small format.) Both watermark types are the same size - and it should have a watermark. You must look harder!
