Hi there guys this will be my first post ; )
I have a question regarding the german inflations stamps.
My question is as follows. What denomination is the highest of your german inflation stamps that have been cancelled. I know they issued a 20 milliarden stamp. Shouldnt it be rarer the higher the denomination is on the stamp.

By the way im glad to have found this place on the web.
I will try to install an old scanner tomorrow so that my future post will have I picture to the topic.

best regards mrmagic

Welcome to the forum.

The German inflationary period is an area that I find quite interesting. It amazes me that they could go from less than a Mark for postage, to 20 Billion Marks (Millarden is Billion in the American way of Million, Billion).

I have one of those suckers (Scott # 308) with a lovely cancellation on it. Scott's only has a value of around 11 bucks for a used one of them. Now the 50 Billion one, is a different matter. Scott's has a 575 dollar value one a postaly used one of those ones. So they are much fewer and further between.

Forgot to mention... Until you hit the really big ones, there isn't as good a correlation between surcharged value and used catalog price as you might expect.

thanks for your quick reply guys.
yes it sure is and interesting period, I recently saw a documentary that touched this period in time in germany.
In the documentary they said that when the inflation was worst,
the employees got their salary 3 times a day. first one was in the morning, and that was handed over to some family member that bought lunch for it. because if they waited until lunchtime they could not afford the lunch.
second salary was given at lunchtime so that they could afford to buy supper. and the final salary was given at the end of the day when the exchange/stockmarket was closed. It was used for buying the coming days breakfast etc.
it finally did collapse because no on could keep up with the actual counting of the rates etc.
Foreign currencies was preferred by shop owners.

best regards mrmagic

Just for reference's sake, here is an image of a 20 Milliarden stamp. As soon as I find my copy of the 50 Mdn stamp I will add it to this post.

According to my cheat sheet's I have the 20 and the 50 both used as singles. I also have the 50 on cover and the 20 on piece. But I'll be darned if I can think of what book, box or file that cover is in.

Here is my highest value used inflation (50 Milliarden) with a cancellation date of 11-12-23 and a scan of the certification mark on the back of the stamp.

Hello, Here is a 1 billion mark statistical tax? revenue stamp. The front reads Statitische Gebuhr, which I think means Statistical tax. Thank you

This seems like the best place to drop in a used inflation-era stamp, in this case with a Stettin cancel.

As I understand it, Stettin (Chechin(?) in Polish) changed hands so many times, the store proprietors had their store names in German on one side and polish on the other. I thought I had relatives from there at one time, but my genealogical research didn't turn up any. If you go up the Oder River and turn left, you will run into the island of Ruegen (ue for the umlauts,) you will find that the name 'Strohmeier' is, or at least was, as common as sand on the beach.

As to the inflation, here's a partial printout from my excel files for German regular postage issues for 1923. I've abbreviated a number of fields/attributes for readability on this forum. I had it nicely formatted, but the spaces got squeezed out. Anyone know how to control the spacing, short of HTML customizing (i.e., insert a table?)

Mr. Magic; welcome to the forum.
