Memel Territory

  • 1701–1918 Part of the Kingdom of Prussia.

  • 1918–1920 Part of the Free State of Prussia in the Weimar Republic.

  • 1920–1923 French Administration under the Treaty of Versailles. Stamps issued.

  • 1923 Occupied by Lithuania, January 9. Stamps issued overprinted Klaipeda.

  • 1923–1939 Autonomous region within the 1st Republic of Lithuania, called Klaipeda.

  • 1939–1945 Occupied by Nazi Germany.

  • 1945–1948 Occupied by the Soviet Union.

  • 1948–1991 Annexed as the Lithuanian SSR, by the Soviet Union.

  • 1991–present 2nd Republic of Lithuania after the fall of the Soviet Union.








The first stamps were overprints on Germany in 1920.



These were followed by overprints on stamps of France.

Nice maps and nice stamps to. I have mayby some Memel stamps but not many.
And I have always wondered where Memel was located.

1871-1918 German Empire
interrupted by Russian Occupation March 19-21, 1915
1918 Nov.11-Dec. 20, German Executive Council of the Workers & Soldiers Of Greater Berlin.
Dec. 20, 1918-Feb. 6, 1919 German Socialist Republic
Feb. 6-Aug, 14 1919 Constituent National Assembly
Aug. 14, 1919-Jan. 10, 1920. German "Weimar Republic"
Jan, 10 1920-Jan. 10, 1923 Memel officially detached from Germany, French troop arrive Feb. 15.
Jan. 10, 1923 Lithuanian irregulars invade fully occupied by Jan 15. Then annexed on Jan. 23 by Lithuania.
Feb. 16, Allies under the Conference of Ambassadors approves Lithuanian sovereignty of Memel. Feb 19 last French troops evacuated. Renamed Klaipeda March 15.

Autonomous Region within Lithuania March 22, 1924
Lithuania cedes Memel to Germany March 23, 1939 incorperated in to the Greater Reich.
Occupied by USSR Oct. 10, 1944.
Reconquered by Germany, Nov. 1944.
Retaken by USSR Jan. 28, 1945
Officially intergrated back into the Lithuanian SSR, April 7, 1948.

I'm always late (sometimes good, sometimes bad), but here is my contribution to the Memel items.

This is a piece of postal stationery. French issued, overprinted MEMEL in 1920. One additional stamp seems to have been looted from the postal card.

This item used November 2, 1920 with a MEMEL postmark. This is the only Memel item in my collection .. so I herewith share...

I assume it is exceedingly "philatelic" in origin.

Hi all,

Here is my collection of this country, only for the French occupation :





Must be complete till 1920 (Sc#1 to 49++).

Sorry but I have only mints, I know that it's not the better way to collect these stamps.

On request, I will upload hi resolution stamps.
