Poland Postcard 1914 Attractive Girl

Heres a great cover I found a picture of a very attractive girl sent from Poland to Germany in 1914 !

Show her back!

Hmm. Doesn't look very Polish to me. Writing on both sides of the card in German. German eagle on the stamps denominated in German marks.

The card is from some German speaking person living in Poland (the stamps with the eagle are from there!) but it was sent in 1924 not in 1914, as can be seen on the writting. In 1914 Poland was not an independent country and had no stamps on its own.

Funny ... I was thinking the same thing :)

So was I, but then I wanted to see the back of the card too.

Well so much for my Polish history...a German card mailed in Poland in 1924 !!

With all due respect to the pretty woman, that's also an interesting postal rate, from the days of Poland's first hyperinflation.

Q/ Would that card have been mailed from the "Danzig Corridor"? Or, were there other autonomous German regions in Poland?

... most of the time, it was in the context of my passing thru a door.

The part of Poland which had been under Prussian/German administration from 1795-1918 was given back to Poland after WWI. This area included Germans plus German-speaking Poles & there were violent uprisings against the new Polish authorities which were put down. All was quiet by 1924 but those Germans were still there, still thought of themselves as German, & were very welcoming of the Nazis in 1939.

I can't quite read all of the postmark but I can make out "WABRZE.." in the bottom part. This would be the district section & we do have the town of Wabrzezno in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, about 35 kilometres (22 miles) northeast of Torun, slap bang in the centre of that German area.

This area was given back to Poland after WWII & all the Germans forcibly repatriated to Germany. This event was commemorated by Germany in 1955.

Poland refused to accept this stamp on mail from Germany, nevertheless, a similar stamp was issued in 1965 marking the 20th anniv of the expatriation.
